On the Ave | The Top 5 Fashion Moments of 2014

I’m still having a hard time processing the fact that 2014 is coming to an end. While I was scrambling to cross off forgotten resolutions before New Year’s Eve, the fashion world was pretty busy this year, proving that fashion is anything but boring. And as excited as I am to say goodbye to the old and welcome the new, we can’t do that without first reflecting on the looks that absolutely wowed us.

Let’s take a look back at the celebs whose style made a huge impact over the last 12 months, shall we?

Here are the top fashion moments of the year:

Lupita Nyong’o in Prada at the Academy Awards

Can we all agree that this was definitely the year of Lupita? Lupita’s name and her sensational style have been on the tip of everyone’s tongues for quite a while. (And she even snagged a front row seat next to Anna Wintour during Fashion Week earlier this year.) But when she floated onto the red carpet in this sparkling Nairobi blue Prada gown, I literally lost my cool. All I remember is screaming “YASSS!” at my television screen in a multitude of octaves. It was a modern-day Cinderella moment. Not only did the dress fit her like a glove and radiate against her oh-so-perfect skin, but she took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress (and made us all cry with her acceptance speech). Here’s hoping 2015 is the “Year of Lupita: Part Deux”!

Kim Kardashian’s Givenchy Haute Couture Wedding Gown

It was the wedding heard ’round the world! Before the #worldsmosttalkedaboutcouple tied the knot, there was much debate over which designer the socialite would don on her big day. It should have come as no surprise when Kim K revealed longtime family friend and Creative Director of GivenchyRiccardo Tisci, was chosen to do the honors. I love anything over-the-top so this custom-made full lace gown was EVERYTHING — from the delicate hand detailing and the sheer panels to the ethereal veil that would have made Princess Di envious. And who could forget about that train?! This was a match made in fashion heaven.

Rihanna’s Crystallized Creation at the CFDA Awards

Say what you want about BadGalRiri, but no one exudes more confidence or is as unapologetic about their style as she is. And this was made loud and clear at this year’s CFDA Awards, where Rihanna was dubbed “Style Icon of the Year.” Paying homage to the regal beauty and effortlessness of Josephine Baker, Rih stunned in an Adam Selman custom creation, complete with over 230,000 Swarovski crystals, fishnet lining, and a strategically placed pink fur stole. She took an idea that — let’s be honest — could have been really tacky, completely owned it, and basically stomped on all of your respectability politics when it comes to what women should/shouldn’t wear. And I am all here for it. You go, girl!

Sarah Jessica Parker in Oscar de la Renta at the Met Gala

From capturing our attention as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City to turning heads as a real-life fashion icon, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Sarah Jessica Parker in a gown I didn’t absolutely love. Her glamour and grace make her the quintessential fashion girl. This year, she didn’t disappoint as she successfully captured the old Hollywood theme of the Met Gala with an Oscar de la Renta gown featuring a black bodice, voluminous ivory skirt, and red stitching of his signature on the train. Notably, this is one of the legendary designer’s most iconic red carpet gowns. RIP Oscar de la Renta. You will forever be missed.

Solange Knowles Slaying With Her Entire Wedding Party

Let this forever mark the year that my girl-crush on Solange was solidified. Her unique personal style and the fact that she marches to the beat of her own drum made her a friend in my head for years. And in true Solange fashion, when she got married to Alan Ferguson, by no means was this a traditional wedding (evidenced by the bride and groom riding through the streets on hand-painted bicycles and the all white everything bridal party). Wearing Stephane Rolland and Humberto Leon for Kenzo, she looked as if she had been sprinkled in fairy dust. (And can we talk about Mama Tina coming for everyone’s heads in her form-fitting gown?) #Flawless
