It was an epic night for NBC as they aired the famous American musical adventure and the latest holiday tradition, The Wiz. Live! Now, unless you have spent much of this past month under a rock, you are probably familiar with the urban remake of The Wizard of Oz in 1978 film and sing-along “The Wiz” that starred Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Lena Horne, and Richard Pryor to name a few. So you can agree with me when I say the bar was set high.
This year’s The Wiz Live eye-popping cast included Shanice Williams (Dorothy), Stephanie Mills (Aunt Em), Amber Riley (Good Witch), David Allen Grier (Cowardly Lion), Elijah Kelley (Scarecrow), Common (Bouncer), Mary J. Blige (Wicked Witch), Queen Latifah (Wiz), Uzo Aduba (Glinda), and Neyo (Tin Woodman).
The nearly 3 hour live production with a uber talented and heavy-hitter cast did not disappoint. It was a solid production with minimal digital graphics, but enough to keep it in its real raw form. The colors and costumes were amazing, the lingo was fresh, and the fierce vogue feel in Emerald City was pure dopeness.
Yes, it was pretty obvious many of us were missing ToTo (Dorothy’s Dog) alongside her as they eased on down the road as we took to Twitter for answers. Nevertheless, I totally understood the reason for his brief appearances–he wanted to watch the show of course.
MUSIC IS LIFE.
Overall, I was totally here for the musical from the dramatic beginning, the latest dances including a dab from the Tin Man (Neyo), Mary J. Blige intense and wicked performance, Uzo Aduba stunning look and comforting words, and of course the phenomenal singing from the entire cast .
I absolutely loved the anticipation prior to the actual viewing and the delivery of a successful production. Shanice Williams as Dorothy had some big bedazzled shoes to fill, but she most certainly held her on and we are ready to see this Rookie blossom into the Queen of Arts.
What were some of your favorite highlights from the show, do tell?
