“When black women are together, a sacred space can be conjured.”
– Ava DuVernary
With all the bad press surrounding #OscarsSoWhite and it’s controversial topic of diversity –or lack thereof–in the media, it’s time for something new. Let’s not forget the boycott of many high-esteemed successful entertainers of color not attending Sunday night’s big show—– but I was in melanin bliss on Saturday night.
Saturday night, the Oprah Winfrey Network partnered and aired Essence Black Women in Hollywood 9th Annual Luncheon held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel . The luncheon honored three iconic black women who have earned the ultimate reason to be celebrated in such a profound way. Also, among the event honorees were a mass diverse group of women in various shades of color, ethnicities, ages, sizes, and backgrounds sitting in an united space–Shonda Rhimes, Zendaya, Tina Knowles, Regina King, Meagan Good, Tia Mowry, and Holly Robinson-Pete. Although, the event was highlighting black women in Hollywood some of the men that gathered to celebrate was Chris Rock and Nick Cannon.
Here are the 2016 Honorees:
Tracie Ellis Ross, Actress-Fierce and Fearless Award
Debbie Allen, Actress, Director, Producer- Legend Award
Nina Shaw, Entertainment Attorney- Lincoln Power Award
This year’s theme “Power of Our Presence” needed no explanation. The backlash of the Oscar’s lack of fair treatment for people of color in Hollywood, this was a clear testament that we can celebrate our OWN!
