“I started #BlackGirlsRock cause I love us. I want us to be free”
—Beverly Bond, Creator of Black Girls Rock
Last evening, BET and Black Girls Rock celebrated black girl magic in a major way at the Black Girls Rock Awards ceremony! The 2016 Honorees included Rhianna (Rock Star Award), Shonda Rhimes (Shot Caller Award), Gladys Knight (Living Legend Award), Danai Gurira (Star Power Award), Amanda Stenberg (Young Gifted and Black Award), and Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza, and Opal Tometi (Community Change Agent Award).
Hosting this year’s ceremony was the returning Black Girls Rock Champion, Tracee Ellis Ross who opened the show with a powerful mash-up number! It included her version of Chaka Khan, Janet Jackson, Diana Ross, Queen Latifah, Rhianna, and Beyoncé.
I believe it’s safe to say Tracee Ellis Ross is a black girl who not only rocks, but slays. #Swag
Among the amazing honorees, host, and presenters were also some great groundbreaking performances from Jazmin Sullivan, Monica, Andra Day, Lauryn Hill, and more!
