Los Angeles, CA., June 27th, 2019 / Giselle Ave. Media – There are two pivotal events that confirm the Summer season has officially arrived: #1 Summer Solstice #2 BET Experience Weekend, featuring the BET Awards! This past Sunday June 23rd, the 2019 BET Awards aired live from the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, CA. Celebrities and fans alike gathered from the Blue Carpet, to pay homage to another great year in music, arts, & entertainment. Is it me or does the BET Awards just get better with time? The 2019 BET Awards always feels like a virtual family reunion, as the entire world watches from their living quarters– while giving play-by-play commentary via Black Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.  As always, we’d like to shed light from some of the best — and needs improvement — moments from this year’s awards show!

Best Moments

H.E.R. Performance feat. YBN Cordae

I’ve always been a fan of H.E.R.’s music–she’s a musical genius. But, her performance  feat. YBN Cordae was way more than fans expected! Above all, I was inspired to listen to the poetic interlude that shed light on the social and spiritual injustices of the world. H.E.R.’s moving new single, feat. YBN Cordae, “Racks” can be streamed everywhere music is sold.

Offset with the Dance Moves

Okay, we all know the Migos come with the drip, but who knew Offset had the moves? In an electric performance with Cardi B. as this year’s show opener; Offset started trending thanks to his surprisingly fire dance moves! Honestly, you learn something new everyday.

Check it out for yourself!

Mary J. Blidge’s Iconic Performance feat. Lil’ Kim & Method Man

Actress, Singer, Dancer, and Auntie to us all — Mary J. Blidge was awarded BET’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and her performance reminded us WHY she is an icon living. We were in the living room, literally yelling at the screen (much like everyone else watching) when Mary J. blessed us with her signature dance moves, and hit singles from her early career, up until today. Not only did she deliver, she brought out the ICONIC Lil’ Kim, & Method Man to bring a few of her greatest hits to life! Thank you Mary, for your lifetime of hardwork, dedication, and commitment to sharing your art with the world.

Tyler Perry’s Acceptance Speech

Tyler Perry was awarded the Ultimate Icon Award and his acceptance speech left us ALL speechless. Here’s my favorite quote:

While you all were begging for A Seat at the Table, I’ll be in Atlanta, building my own. – Tyler Perry

Who can relate? I can relate!!!! Checkout the full speech here:

Needs Improvement Moments

Live from The Blue Carpet

This year’s red carpet was blue in honor of the late, Nipsey Hussle. Since the awards show is historically held in Los Angeles, it was only right for the production team to honor Nipsey Hussle both on the blue carpet, and by inviting his entire family to the stage to share their thoughts with the audience about their family’s loss. #RIPNipseyHussle

The only downside to the blue carpet was the fact that the carpet and blue lighting did not compliment many of our favorite melanin-rich celebrities. There was a lot of commentary online that suggest the blue carpet made darker-skinned celebs look ashy. Well, the thought was great. Also, the pre-show had poor audio and overall energy from the audience. It was really hard to watch, but I’m glad Karrueche was invited to host the show because she did SUCH A GREAT job!
