Giselle Climpson (GC): Hello, everyone! Today, we have a very special guest on Giselle Avenue – the radiant Summer Jackson, Media Personality and Host extraordinaire. Welcome, Summer! Let’s dive right in.

GC: First off, Summer, could you tell us a little bit about yourself? Your family life, zodiac sign, location, current occupation, and how your journey into the world of media began?

Summer Jackson (SJ): Absolutely, Giselle. I’m thrilled to be here! I’m Summer, Mommy of two amazing daughters, and I’m a Pisces. I’m currently located in the vibrant city of Atlanta, Georgia. I wear many hats in the media world – I’m a TV Host, Professor, and a dedicated advocate for all things media.

My journey began with a childhood passion for art and creativity. I wanted to be an artist in elementary school, but as I grew, I found my calling in Broadcast Journalism, utilizing my love for writing, presentation, and public speaking.

GC: It’s clear that your passion for communication and storytelling led you to where you are today. Can you share a bit about your early career and the path that eventually led you to Atlanta?

SJ: Of course, Giselle. I took the traditional local news route, starting in the suburbs of Chicago. After majoring in TV and communication, I landed my first job at an NBC Affiliate in the Danville-Springfield-Champagne Market. It was a great learning experience where I honed my reporting skills. I also had the opportunity to do casting interviews with MTV.

SJ: I then became the Vermillion County Bureau Chief and ran the entire newsroom. My career took me to various cities, covering breaking news and even experiencing the chaos of Hurricane Katrina. I’ve always been excited about people sharing their stories with me, and that’s a big part of being a reporter.

GC: Your journey is truly inspiring, Summer. Can you share a personal experience that highlights your resilience in overcoming career challenges?

SJ: Resilience is a crucial trait in this industry and in life, Giselle. No matter what happens, you have to keep going. When Hurricane Katrina hit, I had to start over from scratch. But even in the face of adversity, I knew there was another chapter in my career. It led me to an entertainment dream job in Chicago. It’s all about staying ready for the big opportunities and building relationships.

However, my true understanding of personal resilience really took shape, when my husband of 17-years suddenly passed away last October. Life came to a halt, but I knew I had to stay strong for our two young daughters. He was an attorney with his own law firm, so I had to handle his business and his personal matters. My faith in God and the love and support of my family, friends and neighbors, has meant everything to the girls and I.

Over the past year, I have truly developed a new understanding of what it means to be resilient. Through it all, I have continued to give my very best in every area of my life.

On the topic of resilience, I’m delighted to announce that the InspireU Network will be presenting me with the Resilience Award at the Annual InspireU Awards Ceremony on Saturday, October 7, 2023, here in Metro Atlanta.

GC: Finding one’s unique voice in the competitive field of media can be challenging. What insights can you share on this?

SJ: Knowing who you are and what you stand for is essential. Every story you cover has a human element, so owning your voice and believing in yourself is key. Don’t be afraid to pursue what brings you joy, even if it’s not the popular choice. Follow the voice inside you, ask for guidance, and you’ll find your unique path.

GC: The media landscape is evolving rapidly. Where do you see media heading in the next 10 years, and what are your thoughts on AI?

SJ: Change is inevitable, Giselle. We’ve seen the shift from horse and carriages to cars, and now we’re embracing AI in the studio. While we may fear being replaced, AI can actually make our jobs easier. We must adapt to these technological shifts and be open to changes in the industry. It’s all about riding the wave and staying committed to lifelong learning.

GC: Finally, Summer, could you share your top 5 favorite media hosts and influencers?

SJ: Certainly, Giselle. My top five would be:

  1. Oprah – she’s everything!
  2. Diane Sawyer – her grace and engagement are unparalleled.
  3. Cheryl Burton – a trailblazing Black woman in TV.
  4. Barbara Walters – she set the foundation and created ‘The View.’
  5. Donnie Simpson – he laid the groundwork for so many.
