As of January 18, 2025, TikTok has ceased operations in the United States due to a federal ban that took effect today. This action affects approximately 170 million American users, as well as numerous small businesses and content creators who relied on the platform.
The ban stems from national security concerns related to TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, and its alleged connections to the Chinese government. Despite TikTok’s denials of these allegations, the U.S. government proceeded with the ban.
Users attempting to access TikTok in the U.S. are now greeted with a message explaining the unavailability of the app due to the ban. The company has expressed hope for a resolution with the incoming administration.
President-elect Donald Trump has indicated a willingness to collaborate on a solution that could potentially reinstate TikTok’s operations in the U.S. He is considering granting a 90-day extension to allow ByteDance to sell the platform to a non-Chinese buyer, which could lead to the app’s return.
