New Year, New Look: 3 Fashion and Beauty Resolutions for 2016

Fashionistas,

I hope your 2016 is off to an amazing start! I love the beginning of a new year. I treat it as a clean slate to reflect on everything that took place in the past year, from triumphs and accomplishments to lessons learned. It helps me set goals for the coming year and figure out where I want to be in all areas of my life.

2015 was the year I discovered so much about myself. After quitting my full-time job (that I absolutely dreaded waking up for each day), I realized I never want my work life to consume me. At the end of the day, a job is just a job and my happiness and quality of life will always be more important than a title. In addition to prioritizing myself over work, I started to prioritize myself more in personal relationships as well. It’s easy to give and give of yourself and burn the candle at both ends, but trust me, you can’t be your best self if you aren’t making sure you are the number one priority.

And while I had quite the revelation in my professional and personal lives, my closet and beauty routine could definitely use some improvement. I vowed to follow three resolutions in 2016. Check them out!

1. Tailor Made

If you don’t know by now, I’m a shopaholic. But my 4’11” stature makes it next to impossible to wear denim jeans without cuffing the bottom or twirl in a floor-length gown without a train covered in dirt at the end of the night. This year, I am investing in chic tailored pieces that will last a lifetime. Going to the tailor to have pieces specially altered costs a pretty penny, but it will be so worth it in the long run!

2. Healthy Hair Don’t Care

I have a hate/hate relationship with my hair right now. No matter how often I wash it, which essential oils I use, or the number of times I massage my scalp, my hair just isn’t feeling it…ever. My tresses took a hit in 2015 after being damaged from tight crochet braids, but in 2016 I plan to come back better than ever. That means figuring out what best works for me (not just relying on YouTube videos) and how I can retain length while protecting my hair. Nothing is off limits (even if I have to chop off a few inches!)

3. Say “Yes!” to Dressing Up

As much as I love fashion, I hate the act of dressing up. On a good day, you might catch me in a pair of skinnies and a cute graphic tee but I’m much more comfy in some leggings, fuzzy socks and an oversized sweatshirt. Since I rarely go out, I have no need to get dolled up to the nines every day. I mean, who even has the time? But this year I plan to make the effort to go an extra mile and spruce up my everyday look more often. Maybe it will give me the motivation I need to stop binge-watching Netflix and actually…socialize. Here’s hoping, right?!
