Today, I woke up. I got in the shower, and got ready for work. I cooked last night, so I have lunch all set for work tomorrow. Guess who won’t be “buying lunch today?” Two Points for me! I walked to my car, hopped in, and was on my :25 minute commute to the office. I made it to work–on time, well ten minutes later than being on time– grabbed a cup of coffee, and started tackling this heap of paperwork on my desk. I paid a bill or two online, and started up my playlist for the day, which includes Ted Talks about purpose, life, and inspiration. Today, I did what most people won’t do, I took initiative, I was brave enough to take full responsibility of the success of my morning. Today, I am Adulting.
“Adulting, wait what do you mean? You did what everyone else does all the time!
Why this random word to describe ordinary behavior?”
Definition: Adulting (v): to do grown up things and hold responsibilities such as, a 9-5 job, a mortgage/rent, a car payment, or anything else that makes one think of grown ups.
Yup, we did it again. Millennials have coined a term to make growing up sound cooler.
Welcome to the world of Adulting. I heard this term several months back, and thought is was the funniest—yet most relatable– term of the year! It’s only March, so yes this is the most accurate term of the year. Here I am, at 27, trying to figure out how to properly fry a chicken breast (they’re huge) and how to calculate my budget and savings for the next month and this is an actual thing!
Adulting, isn’t so bad. It’s not easy, it’s actually not easy at all.. but it’s legit. It is a real thing and my peers and I are taking full control of this new term. How? We’re talking career strides, buying homes, love & marriage, starting new businesses, all of that. Big Ideas.
But, we are also in the midst of the awkward adult-related talks that make us go Hmmmmmm…
“Spring Break? There is no Spring Break!”
“I asked my parents for money… *crickets”
“I’m 27, my biological time clock starts now.”
One of my favorite tips: HARDEN THE F&^% UP!! This is one of my current lessons, how to harden up and stop taking shit from everyone. You know the old saying “I’m grown.” Those two words that you wouldn’t dare tell your parents, but you secretly wanted to? Yeah, well now you really are–grown. This is the most liberating yet, debilitating ideas from Adulting.
You have two options:
You can blame everyone else for your failures in life. You can blame your childhood, or your parents, or mean people, or your frienemies.
You can decide to win in life.
Take your pick.
Adulting, simply put, is being a damn grown up. Millennials are so cool, that we’ve romanticized adulthood.
Here’s a talk from Tai Lopez, who simplifies the Good Life, which can also be found while Adulting:
Now that you know what everyone is talking about when they say they’re Adulting– you won’t be so far out of the loop.
How did you succeed at Adulting today?
